About UOM Online

University of Madras started in 1857. It's India's second-oldest university. The founders built it in Chepauk, Chennai. Robert Chisholm designed the first building in 1861. Sir Christopher Rawlinson served as the first Vice-Chancellor. The university began with four faculties: Arts, Law, Medicine, and Engineering.

NAAC accredited the university at "Five Star" level in 2000. UGC granted it "University with Potential for Excellence" status the same year. NAAC has since reaccredited it with an A++ grade, CGPA 3.59 out of 4.00.

The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) started in 1981. IDE introduced online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes continued without interruption during lockdowns. This made IDE one of India's earliest distance-education institutes to shift fully online.

Online students get real benefits today. IDE has been running the Choice Based Credit System since 2018. This lets students transfer credits to regular mode. Theory PCP classes stream online and stay optional to attend. Students access study material anytime using their Enrolment Number as login. IDE also built the RUSA_ECH Audio-Video Editing Lab for e-content production. 74 Learner Support Centres across Tamil Nadu handle local admission and material collection.
