• Flexible Admission Cycles Two intake streams run each year. Academic Year Stream runs July to June. Calendar Year Stream runs January to December. UG admission needs a pass in Higher Secondary (+2) or an equivalent exam. PG admission needs a pass in any UG degree recognized by UGC.

• Hybrid Personal Contact Programmes (PCP) Theory PCP classes run online. Attendance stays optional for all non-practical UG and PG programmes. Practical PCP classes run offline at IDE, Chepauk Campus, Chennai, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. BCA students need 50% theory attendance and 100% practical attendance. M.Sc Cyber Forensics and M.Sc IT students follow the same rule.

• Low Fee Structure First-year UG fees start at Rs. 6,470 for B.A. Tamil and B.A. English. B.Com fees start at Rs. 7,450. BCA costs Rs. 10,070 in the first year. First-year PG fees start at Rs. 7,400 for M.A. and M.Com programmes. M.Sc Information Technology costs Rs. 16,150 in year one. Diploma fees range from Rs. 6,400 to Rs. 12,400. Certificate fees range from Rs. 5,550 to Rs. 8,750.

• 74 Learner Support Centres Statewide IDE runs 74 Learner Support Centres across Tamil Nadu. Centres operate in Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts. Students register at their nearest centre, submit certificates, pay fees, and collect study material and ID cards locally.

• Fee Exemptions for Differently-Abled Students Visually challenged students pay zero tuition and zero exam fees. Differently-abled students with at least 40% physical disability get full tuition and special fee exemption. They need a National Identity Card for disability issued by a competent authority. Prisoners in Tamil Nadu can get tuition fee exemption with a No Objection Certificate from the competent authority.

About UOM Online

University of Madras started in 1857. It's India's second-oldest university. The founders built it in Chepauk, Chennai. Robert Chisholm designed the first building in 1861. Sir Christopher Rawlinson served as the first Vice-Chancellor. The university began with four faculties: Arts, Law, Medicine, and Engineering.

• Web-Based E-Learning Portal IDE runs a separate Centre for Web Based E-Learning. This section lists YouTube and NPTEL video links by course and paper. Subjects include B.Sc Mathematics, MCA, MBA, B.Com, Psychology, English, and Tamil Literature. Each paper links to 1 to 20 external video sources.

• Virtual Lecture Schedules Check the "PCP Classes" tab on the homepage for class details. This tab shows Meeting IDs, links, and passwords by batch. IDE lists 8 batch tabs: C26, A25, C25, A24, C24, A23, C23, and A22. Refresh this tab every week during your semester.

• SMS Alerts for PCP Classes IDE's FAQ lists PCP class SMS as optional. The website's PCP Classes tab is the primary source for class updates. Check that tab each week to get the day's Meeting ID, link, and password.

• Compulsory Internal Assignment (MCQ Portal) Submit internal assessments on the MCQ portal. Log in with 2 fields: Register Number and Date of Birth.

• Assignment Deadline The current cutoff for Internal Assessment is 31 August 2026. This date applies to students from C26 back through several arrear batches: A25, C25, A24, C24, A23, and C23. Check the portal directly, since this date can change per notice.

• Missed Assignment Consequence The MCQ portal states results release only after Internal Assignment submission. Treat the MCQ test as a separate requirement alongside your paper exams.

• Personal Data Access (Student Login) Log in at the Student Login popup with 3 fields: Enrollment Number, Date of Birth, and Password. Your registered phone number works as the password. Update your phone number, email ID, and address anytime after logging in — no office visit required.

• Secure Payment Portal Pay fees only through the official Indian Bank gateway linked on the university's site. Download your e-receipt from the same bank portal.

• Fee Deadlines Recent postings show separate penalty-free deadlines by batch. Example: A25 (II Year) and A24 (III Year) had a no-penalty date of 15 August 2026. C25 and C24 batches had earlier penalty triggers around 28 February and 30 May 2026. Pay tuition fees on time to keep your exam eligibility.

• Fraud Protection Alert IDE's site states plainly: "University is not responsible for any payment made through third party / UPI accounts." Use the official gateway link posted on the university's site for all payments.

• Unofficial WhatsApp Groups Warning IDE communicates official updates through 1 verified channel. The homepage advises students to rely on that channel rather than third-party WhatsApp groups using IDE's name.

• Data Protection Policy Keep your Enrollment Number, Date of Birth, and Mobile Number private. IDE states it will take punitive action against anyone who misuses these details or its name to commit fraud.

Admission and Process Constraints

Lateral Entry Documentation
Direct second or third-year admission needs strict paperwork. You need two attested copies of the syllabus. Original 10th and 12th mark sheets are a must. You also need your prior UG mark statement and Transfer Certificate.

Practical Contact Classes
PCP theory and practical classes run only in Chennai. They're only for Single Window Admission students. Check the schedule often.

Who Should Apply UOM Online Courses

Indian Residents and Nationals

IDE, University of Madras, admits only Indian Nationals. UGC-DEB regulations bar foreign nationals from UG and PG degree programmes under ODL mode. You must hold Indian nationality to enrol.

Traditional School and College Graduates

(via Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Technology, IT, or related fields from the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai).

Students Seeking Dual Qualifications

Already enrolled in a UG degree? You can add one Certificate programme alongside it. Already enrolled in a PG degree? You can add one Diploma programme alongside it. You need a bonafide certificate from your current institution to apply. Only one additional Certificate or Diploma is allowed at a time — not both together.

Working Professionals Needing Flexibility

IDE currently offers 59 programmes: 12 Undergraduate, 12 Postgraduate, 19 Diploma, and 16 Certificate courses. All carry UGC-DEB approval under letter No. F. No. 30-9/2023 (DEB-II), dated 19.01.2024.

UOM Online Admission Process

Step 1: Get Your ABC ID and DEB ID Register for your Academic Bank Credits (ABC) ID through the official government portal. Register for your Distance Education Bureau (DEB) ID through the UGC's student portal. Both are mandatory before you apply.

Step 2: Fill the Application Form Apply online through the official IDE admission portal. Or buy the physical form for Rs. 236 at the Chepauk campus, paid by QR code only.

Step 3: Choose Your Course, Pick your programme, medium of instruction, and language paper. Fill the Computer Coding Sheet in capital letters. Your mobile number becomes your login password.

Step 4: Pay Your Fees Pay online through the official gateway, or use a bank challan at Indian Bank. The university takes no responsibility for payments made through third-party or UPI accounts. Fees are non-refundable once paid, under any circumstances.

Step 5: Collect Your Certificates Gather your SSLC, HSC, and Transfer Certificate. Attach attested photocopies. Add a COBSE certificate if you're from another state board.

Step 6: Submit for Verification Submit originals in person at Chepauk, or send by Registered Post within 15 days of online registration. Your admission gets cancelled automatically if you miss this deadline. The tuition fee you paid will not be refunded.

Step 7: Collect Your ID and Study Materials Once verified, collect your ID card and books from the Single Window Admission Centre or your nearest Learner Support Centre.
